The fringe impacts of a divorce

When people think about the main impacts of a divorce, they often think of obvious things like moving out of the house, not living with their spouse any longer or not seeing the children as often. They know that life is going to change.

However, it is important to consider other fringe impacts of divorce or things that are less obvious but can still have a massive impact on your life.

For example, some studies have found that divorce can have an impact on your health. Men tend to gain weight. Both genders may wind up with higher blood pressure. Just dealing with the divorce itself can be stressful, which may lead to similar issues.

Another thing to consider is the financial impact of the divorce depending on your age. Gray divorce has doubled in popularity in the last 30 years, for example, so more and more people are getting divorced in their 50s. For them, this can really impact their finances, their plans for retirement and their savings. Divorce does have a financial element for younger couples, but it’s different just because of where they are in their lives.

None of this is intended to talk you out of a divorce; if your spouse filed, you may have no choice anyway. You just need to know what the divorce could mean in your life and how you can address it. What can you do to reduce stress, for instance, or to plan for your retirement and the potential financial changes? When you know what questions to ask, there are solutions, so be sure you look into your legal options.
