Speed differences cause accidents

You have probably heard that speeding causes car accidents and that driver safety is the reason for speed limits, traffic tickets and other types of enforcement. This is true, as speeding drivers can’t react as well to unforeseen hazards, may lose control of their vehicles and can cause crashes.

But it’s not just speeding that is a problem. It is the difference in speed between two vehicles that are sharing the same road. When there is a great difference, the odds of an accident go up.

That’s true when one driver is driving too slowly, not just when they’re speeding. They create traffic congestion that would otherwise not exist. They force drivers behind them to pass, which is more dangerous in almost every situation. They can cause tailgating and road rage when drivers cannot get around; these things are not necessarily the fault of the slow drivers, in a legal sense, but they do only happen because those drivers are going so slowly.

The best way for traffic to move without accidents is when it is flowing consistently, at the same speed and in the same direction. Many slow drivers think that they’re safe. They believe they are preventing accidents by slowing down, and they wish others would do the same. The truth, though, is that they’re actually causing more crashes. If they really wanted to prevent accidents, they would simply drive at the speed of the cars around them.

If you get involved in a crash caused by another driver at any speed, you may be able to seek financial compensation. It can help cover your medical bills, lost wages and other such costs.
